Maya's future additions
I would like for them to release in April, like Indrema pointed out, as that was the release month for the 2010(?) - 2016 versions of Maya.

That being said, Siggraph is a much more likely timeframe for 2018 considering they released 2017 then last year as well. It looks to be the new release time for development.

Those I've spoken to in the beta seem to like what AD has been doing :)

Hi Peter,

Just had a quick question about Linux installs. In the download, you have two variations, one compiled with GCC 4.5.1 and the other GCC 5.3.1.

Is there a recommended path to take? I'm using CentOS 7.3, and wasn't sure if because it internally uses 4.8.5 I should use the 4 branch, with the 5 branch reserved for those distro's using 5.x+. I've been using the 4.5.1 version until now.

Thanks!
Mike

fumefx to vdb convert
Are you talking about the FumeFX .f3d format? If so, I'm not sure if that's possible. Couldn't find anything online about doing that, so you may have to do some manual work. If it's possible, try to mesh the sim from FumeFX, then extract the fields from that mesh into a new VDB file.

If you have the original sim scene, it may just be faster to re-sim and export as a VDB (if you have 4.x).

Thanks again Besha!

Peter, think you could sticky the 12-05 release to replace the 06-21 release?

Thank you so much, besha!

Hi Evgeny,

Just wanted to make a quick query about the status of the latest OpenVDB build for Linux. I understand you're a very busy person, so if you ever need a hand with compiling the Linux version I (and probably the community) would be more than willing to help out! It's been a bit over a month, so I wasn't sure whether to be concerned if something happened.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Besha, any chance of an update to the main thread for this and when the Linux variant will be released?

Thanks

2016+ Node Graph
Hi Rolf. The changes to the node editor are pretty substantial in 2016, in seeing Softimage's ICE graph I think I know where they got it from.

In general key shortcuts:

1 = Collapse node into single input/output
2 = Show only connected inputs/outputs
3 = Show all inputs/outputs, whether or not they're connected
4 = 3, or show custom attributes list if available.

You can also accomplish this with the 3 bar icons in the top right of each node and the top status bar of the graph.

Can also confirm OpenVDB not loading on W10. Used to work fine, is it possible to recompile the plugin Besha? Something seems to have changed.

Prefix for Soup
I don't know if it already does this, but do the nodes show up in the Create Node menu? Like when using a 3rd-Part render engine, it usually has a section in the hypershade or create nodes menu. Soup seems to be Shelf and 'Tab' related.

The backwords compatibility would be hard to keep track. Unless someone wrote a script to convert all previous nodes in a scene file to the new node names, similar to the script Lollipop Shaders wrote for converting RenderMan 20 scenes to RenderMan 21 scenes.

Would changing node names affect UI tools like the Instance Manager?

vdbExport Script
Got it. I haven't gotten the chance to test it fully yet, but does your script support nodes past the fluidshape? Like if I pipe the FluidShape into a VDBfromFluid then into a remap node (or other configuration) then to a Write node/Visualize node, will it retain all of that info? Or does it go straight from FluidShape > Export?

Thanks for the script!

vdbExport Script
That fix worked beautifully Ruchit. Redshift users also reported success with this non-indented version.

I've also found the just starting at `import vdbExport` in the initiation script works as long as the script is in a known place for Maya, like 201X\scripts, prefs\scripts, or maya\scripts, etc

vdbExport Script
I've also shared this on the Redshift forums, and a question was brought up:

Quote: Wonder if it still works if you add some other nodes in between like remap.

Any input on this?

Still nothing. Here's the output:
