I'm going to be posting a lot for a while as I work on re-writing the docs (a self imposed task) It will help me know all about SOuP and help other people learn it as well. I have a bit of slow time and can see SOuP being a big part of my coming workflow if I want, hence me pushing on it and trying to get to know everything.

I'm working on a google doc
This should dynamically update, since I'll be writing more of the nodes initial description today.

still working on it, obviously, and starting with what peter wrote. Initially some nodes will have more generic re-writes of peter's description until I get to dig into that node specifically to add my own insight to it.

Also i noticed that you are probably using older version of the tools. At least the shelf is missing some items.
Also there are 2 nodes that are not on the shelves:
- voronoiTexture3D
- arrayToTexture2D (will be in the tomorrows build)

Maybe we can remove the shelves you put there otherwise we have to consistently update them.

Also, there was a post i made not so far ago about the voronoi texture and how to use it to shatter objects in Maya easily, here: http://soup-dev.websitetoolbox.com/post/new-update-20111007-5527656

Maybe we can mention some of that in the docs.

for the time being I will constantly update and refine it. When it gets to a certain point of completion I'll hand it over to someone for continued maintenance. At any point I can export and email you the current docs, or if you have a google account I can add you to the google doc so you can edit it at any time.

eventually I'll make the shelf just a string of icon images that will be easier to swap a new ones in and out

This is my initial idea for how I will organize the node docs

Each node documentation will have:
1 line Definition:
Icon:
detailed Explanation:
how to use:
examples:
example Maya files names:
video tutorial (optional):
node author (optional)

sounds pretty good.
there are 2-3 help pages available in the SOuP archive.
I think aikiman drafted them long ago.

I think your proposed structure will do.

I may take over when you get tired/done with it. :)

Thanks Aikiman. What we SHOULD do, now that I think about it. it make it a wiki so everyone can edit it and add to and refine. Anyone have experience setting up a public wiki? I'll look into it.
The plan is to keep working in google docs for now, but really doing docs is something that is on going and a large task. As I get this information together, I think the key step to turn it over to the public is make it a wiki.

I'm still trying to figure out how to keep it clean and to the point. I think there might be too much clutter information, when people really need to get the most information in the shortest amount of words. Video tutorials to help guide the process. Still WIP just wanted to share what I'm doing and get input from the SOuP eaters.

I just finished getting all the information from the site now on it. with a little of my own. Next go over some key nides and re-write them add details and attr explanations.

Yeah, I actually thought it would be nice to have a short video tut on each node and I'll be happy to contribute with that at one point.

yeah great! thats what I hope we can do.

I'd love to get the old docs the "2-3 help pages available in the SOuP archive." Peter mentioned.

I found out we need a wiki server or we can get a free wiki service, or make a wikipedia entry. Aikiman, whats the web service like? can we get a wiki?

The host provider offers:

- media wiki - a powerful collaborative editing software, which provides advanced features such as online editing of page content, allowing other users to edit the content, user management and image upload.
- wordpress - an easy-to-use weblog system, providing numerous features like categories, ratings as well as plugins installation.

Great! this will do nicely. We can edit it as we go. I'll spend some time today to convert over what I've done.

I tried to edit that page, but I needed to log in, tried to log in, needed to create a new user account, tried to create user account got this before I even was asked anything

You do not have permission to create this user account, for the following reason:

The action you have requested is limited to users in the group: Administrators.

Oh and I found this which is helpful to anyone who wants to help
