Couldnt really find anything online explaining in simple math terms what the difference here is, or is it more related to color and alpha?

Also some light on the Kernal: option would be good. :)

Check the attached file - i used point colors there to make it clear in the viewport, but the "merge" and "blend" all other streams too.

If "merge" is "off" the incoming point colors won't be considered.
If "blend" is off the computed results inside the attributeTransfer node will override the incoming ones, but not get blended together.

Set one of the bounding objects to have red color, the other one green.
Overlap them partially.
Insert a key in the kernel ramp - somewhere in the middle.
Move it around and see how the spill gets effected.
